June Question of the Day Ideas for 1st to 3rd Grade

The last weeks of school are full. Field trips, assemblies, and end of year events can make every day feel different.
A June question of the day gives students one routine they know by heart. They can do it on their own, even on the busiest days. Here are some of my favorite June questions and an ocean week plan.

What Are Good Inquiry Questions for June?
Good June questions connect to oceans, summer, and the changing seasons. Questions about amazing animals keep students excited right to the last day.
Here are some questions from my June set.
Oceans
What is the largest ocean animal?
Why do jellyfish sting?
Why should we not use plastic straws?
Amazing animals
Why are flamingos pink?
Why do some goats faint?
How do lizards sleep?
Do animals have feelings?
Sky and seasons
Why are the seasons different?
Why do stars twinkle?
How do planes fly?
What is the oldest sport?
How Can You Connect These Questions to June?
World Oceans Day is June 8. Summer starts this month too. Both give you easy connections.
Spend a week on the ocean questions around World Oceans Day.
Ask "Why are the seasons different?" as students get ready for summer.
Use "How do planes fly?" before summer travel.
Pair "What is the oldest sport?" with a field day or sports day.
An Ocean Week Plan for June
Spend one week on ocean and animal questions. By June, most students can do every day on their own.
Monday: What is the largest ocean animal? Students research on their own.
Tuesday: Why should we not use plastic straws? Students research, then talk about one way to help the ocean.
Wednesday: Why do jellyfish sting?
Thursday: Why are flamingos pink?
Friday: Why do stars twinkle? Students research on their own, then share with the class.
Teacher Tip for June
Before students take their booklets home, make a class book called "Things We Found Out This Year." Each student picks their favorite question from the year and adds a page with the answer and a picture. It is a great way to look back at how much they learned.
